Toasted burley tobacco complemented with a hint of hazelnut for a rich rounded flavour.

Amphora is the trademark of high quality pipe tobacco.
Notes: Made by MacBaren since 2006, the company owns the blend as of 2015.
Due to EU regulations, it is renamed and sold in those countries as "Rich".

The burley is earthy, woody, nutty sweet with a very mild cocoa hit as the star component. The dry, earthy, lightly floral, herbal, woody, lightly sweet Oriental also sports a touch of spice in the background. The Virginia is a minor, grassy player with a little tart and tangy citrus. The hazelnut has a little richness to go along with dry, slightly toasted quality as it mildly sublimates the tobaccos. The strength is just past being mild, while the taste is in the center of mild to medium. Has a very mild nicotine hit. Won’t bite or get harsh. It has a light complexity, and the sweet, very slightly creamy flavor is very consistent throughout the smoke. Burns at a reasonable pace; very cool and clean. Requires an average number of relights, and leaves little dampness in the bowl. Has a very pleasant lightly lingering after taste and room note. An easy going all day smoke.

Amphora Rich Aroma (now only Amphora Rich) is an aromatic in the dutch tradition. To be clear, not a natural aromatic but a flavored mixture. Better than its most famous medium - bodied red sibling (Amphora Full), this one is really a perfect dutch aromatic blend. Virginia, Burley and Oriental with a sweet and rich casing but without cloying. Fine, pleasant, ideal for aromatic’ lovers and for all those who love a classic flavored blend. Three stars for aromatic’ lovers, two stars for everyone else and two stars and a half in my personal taste. Certainly to taste. Especially if you want to try the old classic aromatic Dutch school. For all these reasons, in my personal rating system (from 1 to 10) my score is 7 and two stars.

Out of the pouch it looks and smells quite similar to its brother Original Blend but sweeter. The smoke is different: RA lacks of that savory Kentucky edge present in OB, the taste is clearly Burley rounded off with a touch of Virginia and a mild sweetener ( hazelnut, they wrote...), maybe there’s too a pinch of Orientals. As every Amphora, RA is skillfully Cavendish processed so it’s very easy to fill and keep lit, gentle to the mouth without harshness or bites, little to none gurgles, room note isn’t a crowd pleasure but tolerable and it leaves in the pipe just a trace of sweet Burley. Not an enticing blend (and not intended to be) but not dull even, it’s a pleasantly mellow, warm and calming smoke.

I don't like Hazelnut Coffee, so I probably would no longer like this blend. But years ago it was a favorite smoke. My memory fades as the years go by, but I distinctly remember liking this blend because it had a tobacco taste and yet made for a great added flavor. If I ever found another pouch I would try it though.

Exactly as the name implies.
If you've already dabbled with Amphora Red (Full Aroma) then this does exactly what it promises. While Full Aroma is a completely wholesome, full-bodied and tasty blend in itself, this is indeed the "rich" version of it; just that little bit darker, little bit fruitier (plums, dates, raisins), little bit more full. Leaning a bit more on the aromatic side, the limited spicing used (such as the touch of cocoa/dark chocolate) is nicely counterbalanced by the tobaccoes used being of a bit stronger and fuller variety. Makes for a truly enjoyable, full and smooth smoke, especially in low temperatures or complementing a hot drink.
Instant favorite and will buy again given the chance. If the local gas station had this along with Red, I could survive indefinitely.

Amphora is probably the most widely commercialized pipe tobacco in Italy. If a tobacconist has to choose one brand of pipe tobacco to sell, it is probably going to be amphora, either full or rich aroma. They owe their popularity to good marketing policy, and because, as it seems, it is good value for money tobacco.
Opening the pouch, one finds mostly medium-to-light brown tobacco, quite dry and coarse cut, it looks more like ready rubbed or broken flake than ribbon. The smell from the pouch is not particularly pleasant, they added an an artificial, lightly sour sweetener, it vaguely resembles fruit, definitely not hazelnut like they say. The smoke is medium bodied, nice tasting, round, nutty, not too hot. The tobacco burns relatively well, although I had to relight a few times (maybe it's me). In the second half of the bowl I had some gurgles. No bite (but I smoked with an active charcoal filter). The room note is nothing to write home about but I had no complaints.
All in all, this is a more than honest pouch tobacco, good value for money, to be smoked on its own or mixed with other blends. IMO the rating should be somewhere in between 2.5 and 3, so I'm giving it two stars to re-balance the rating a bit.
PS The pouch says it is made under licence from Van Nelle, a Dutch RYO tobacco manifacturer...
TIP: it mixes very well with some crumbled Toscano cigar!

I tried several packing methods, variable the dryness, tried it on briar and cob pipes. I even smoked it very slowly but sadly something in this blend doesn't agree with my tongue. I got slight tongue bite from the charring light already. The nutty and choco taste is there but my tongue all sore. I guess this wasn't for me. Maybe i could try to use it as a mixing.

This is my very cup of tea. I pretend to be a Burley lover, and this is mainly a decent Burley mixture. Everytime they call a tobacco a Burley/Virginia mix, you must know you'll find little Virginia and more Burley...I guess Virginia must be just more expensive. I love Virginia too, so finally I like every well done Burley/Virginia mix, with whatever percentages. As usual, also this mixture contains more Burley than VA, and is a nice Burley, even if it is not the best. And I've nothing to blame with, because for the price, you're getting enough quality here. I'm smoking this Amphora green now, after I had forgotten it for my last 20 years...because many years ago I did not find it so interesting Amphora tobaccos...guess I have been kinda snobby smoker. So, after many years, I got old and changed my mind, and I'm testing again many kind of cheap/drugstore tobaccos, and guess what, I'm actually digging a lot of hidden gold here and there! This nice easy tobacco will not disappoint a sincere Burley and Virginia lover, and will not bite his tongue. Easy to smoke, will need 1/2 weeks out of the pouch, in a glass jar not too much closed, because it needs to breth and to lose some moisture. In fact, when is just open, it's often too moist and difficult to smoke and keep lit. It is a good base to mix, whit something sweet (like vanilla) to make a more intense aromatic, or with some Latakìa to make kinda English Mix.
Addendum - After a week, after an entire pouch smoked, after I smoked it in different kind and brand of pipes, after all, I can say something more: It's definitively in my top 10. I must add the forth star, recommended to Burley enthusiasts...

Package note of nuts, wood and chocolate. The mostly dark brown tobacco is ribbon cut, and a little on the dry side. no prep needed. Burns moderately with few relights. The strength is mild to medium and nic is mild. Flavoring is very mild, only coming through every now and again. Taste is mild to medium and consistent, with complex notes of rich earth, dry woody, nutty, mild herbal spice, mildly floral, mild sweet grass, very mild lemon, a mild cocoa background note, and has a mildly peppery retro. Burley is leading with Virginias and Orientals supporting, flavoring supports inconsistently. Room note is very pleasant, and aftertaste is great.

In brief: dry and slightly floral/fruity, not unpleasant but not my favourite. I have tried it once, perhaps it was slightly dried since the jar was stored since a while (few months). It is light and mildly earthy. The nicotine content does not seem to be particularly strong. Overall I admit I did not fall in love with it, perhaps one additional reason is that I found the smoke tastes more like a cigarette tobacco than a pipe tobacco.

Tobacco flavor still shines through, topping adds some dark, nutty sweetness as an extension that doesn't feel unnatural. A hint of spiciness on the retrohale. There's a bitterness that increases throughout the bowl. Unpleasant aftertaste in the mouth. In my opinion fuller, rounder and more balanced than its brother Amphora Full. One of the better OTC aromatics if you don't mind the bitter taste.

Me and Amphora go a long way, Full Aroma being the first tobacco that I've ever smoked. While I haven't smoked that in many years, Rich has the typical elements I associate with Amphora aromatic: high quality tobaccos, superior blending skill, slow burn and a somewhat different aromatic experience.
For the best results, some drying time is required (20-30 minutes). And this one stays moist for a long time, even in an unsealed pouch. But it's a real ease to work with. Can be further rubbed out, though not mandatory. The unlit smell is very pleasant and not your typical aromatic smell. It smells more like a Virginia blend, with a nice hazelnut fragrance and a hint of chocolate.
Getting it lit is very easy and, once it settles down, it leads to a very enjoyable, cool and slow smoke (+2h in my House Pipe). The component tobaccos are well harmonized, with the Burley, Oriental and Virginia making their presence known in that order. And they are well-rounded by that hazelnut flavor which, while not heavy, is evident. However, it does not taste artificial or too sweet, yet it gives the smoke a very smooth, creamy, velvety and relaxing quality. The taste is consistent from start to finish, regardless if smoked in a small or large bowl. The overall taste is rather simple, yet it carries enough complexity to prevent it from being a boring blend.
To round it up, Rich is a high-quality aromatic which, even though it can be considered an OTC, delivers by offering a very relaxing and enjoyable experience. A nice, easy-going all day smoke and also a nice change of pace from your typical sweet, sugary aromatic.

Trying this blend at the moment, had about 3 bowls of this stuff and i gotta say i like it! The pouch note isin't what i expected, i thought from the description, it will be some sort of sweet aromatic with alot of casing buuuuuttt.... that was not the case. It smelled of virginias and burley and some nutty scent but nothing over the top what so ever. Now, when i lit up this tobacco, in a large bowl might I add due to its corse cut and alot of broken flakes, the tatse struck me of hazelnut/walnut right of the bat with that great burley backbone and some virginia sweetness. It was a bit bitter in the intitial few puffs so i advise short slow puffs until the flavours mellow out a bit. Mid bowl is when i start enjoying the blend much more. Great for pairing with coffee and i imagine it will be a great burley based baccy to mix with others which i have yet to try! Overall for the price and value i like it, it isint something mind blowing by any means but for what it is its tasty.

Nutty with cacao under notes and a hint of sweet spices. Love it! That said, I am intolerant to Burley and can't get even close to the majority of Burley containing blends due to fear of getting yeast infection on my tongue. Rich Aroma is one of those few exceptions; I guess Mac Baren did an excellent job of balancing Burley with their cavendish. Whatever the actual reason is for this phenomenon, I am thankful and will always keep a pouch or two in the stash.

A nutty burley-based tobacco with a very light hazelnut topping. Not too sweet. The light hazelnut flavoring never overwhelms the natural, nutty burley tobacco taste. Can be smoked all day without becoming tiresome. Room note is acceptable. Like all Amphora blends, it's fairly dry in the pouch with very little topping, but does need some drying time to bring out the subtle flavors. It burns well and doesn't bite (even after multiple bowls), plus has a decent amount of nicotine. Not really much else to say about this nice tobacco. It's a good, daily blend that you probably won't tire of. Amphora Rich Aroma compliments their Full Aroma blend nicely.

Based on the amazing smell in the bag, I was expecting a more nutty flavour smoke. Not that the smoke was bad in anyway. It was quite enjoyable, mellowing after a few minutes into a nice deep well rounded smoke with the hints of hazelnut as described on the package. I was just expecting a punch in the face of nuttiness, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. It's definite worth a try.

Despite I prefer the Original Blend I really recommend this one, for newbee pipe smokers in particular. Smooth, fragrant, simple and round, classical adjective for a classical tobacco: straight in taste, not much "addicted" with aromatized crap, but in the same time appreciable for the natural sweet taste. Sure there's some hazelnut aroma, but it isn't the sweet icecream hazelnut taste, is instead a natural dried fruit hazelnut taste that enhance the kentucky presence. An all day tobacco type, perfect with any type of pipe. In the beginning need some control for the charge and the lighting, but it's part of the game, and this can be, maybe, another "training" reason for I recommend this tobacco to a fresh new pipe smoker.
Type: Natural aromatic burley mixture ; Contents: Burley, Kentucky, Oriental & Virginia ; Flavoring: Hazelnut (very mild taste) ; Cut: Ribbon / Flake ready rubbed ; Humidity: Pretty moist and slow burning; Lighting: I say normal and constant burning but need some practice in the first time ; Pipe recommended: All kind are fine, but obviously for a full burley mixture experience a large bowl is mandatory, better with a chubby type. For some strange reason the meerschaum experience is not good as I expected for burley mix.

When I first read the reviews on this amphora aromatic, after buying a rainy- sunday last pouch left at the tobacconist I feared it maybe one of the dullest blends out for sale here in Italy, plus I am not an Amphora lover.
I have to say it's a very "mild" tobacco, from all possible points of view. Mild strength indeed, mild flavoring, some nutty-chocolatey scent and nothing more, vanishing taste. A simple, monotone burley blend.
Among blends we can taste out here, some Skandinavik mild aromatic blend along with Park lane Nr. 7 & basic burley blends seem way more interesting than this Amphora title. The Cavendish inside this reminds me of that weird flowery scent infused in Clan. And that doesn't please much.
Luckily, but quite obviously, this doesn't bite.
The cut, very easy to pack, it's the same ol' Amphora "mix" of big shags and ready rubbed, maybe some cubes.
I've tried this in little and medium bowls, even after some aging, but It doesn't show nothing particular and never evolves .

Back in the D&E era, I smoked many pouches and bulk cans of this blend and it was my preference among their offered colors. However, that was before my exposure to true flakes as VAs and VApers that I presently prefer and also before Imperial took over and stopped sales in the USA. That really forced me to explore other options and broaden my experiments with other blends. Not a good enough tobacco to go thru the hassle and expense of obtaining from overseas.

Another blend licensed by Van Nelle of Holland.
A nice try but falls short of the red pouch Full Aroma. I can't put my finger on how to describe the aroma in the pouch but it does smell refreshing.
Predominantly partially rubbed-out burley with specs of what appears to be oriental, it is sufficiently moist in the pouch but barely so. Once removed from the pouch to a jar suffice it to say that a humi-disc would be in order.
Since this is long and coarse packing a bowl can be tricky. I first tried this as-is in a small bowl meer-lined Butz Choquin....big mistake! Though it lights easily and stays lit, burns a bit hot but to the bottom, the smoke quickly hits the tongue with a biting, acidic punch. This is better rubbed-out some more and packed in a larger bowl...preferably a pipe with filter which reduces that nasty bite somewhat.
I could not taste any hazelnut........until I took a sip of coffee, and aaaahhh....the hazelnut comes to the surface of the palate.
Rich Aroma fails to describe the room note which seems to me to be simply an aroma of tobacco smoke.....not annoying but certainly not what I would call a rich aroma.
After shredding a bowl-full of this by hand and loading my Brigham Algonquin Volcano, it was a better smoke, but certainly not an all-day one.
I have found that mixing this with Original blend 50/50 makes for an enjoyable relaxing, unhurried smoke.
I can only give this 2 stars. Beginners should avoid this. Go for the red pouch Full Aroma or the Original Blend. Skip this unless you plan to mix it with something to tame that burley. Personally, I'll keep the rest and do some experimentation with custom blending this stuff until I come up with something I could give more praise.......on its own, its not worth the $$$.

The first time in my life I tried Rich Aroma (the green one) was about five years ago, approximately right after the Amphora line went into the Imperial Tobacco Group.
It was not a nice experience... Amphora Green was so mild, bitey, and the distinctive hazelnut flavour just so faint that I could hardly notice. In short: hot air.
I don't know why I have been tempted to try it again, maybe simply the green pouch called me (and the brown, too...). But I have to say it's not as bad as I remembered.
It is a light brown Burley-based typical dutch cavendish; mild in strength, the aroma is monochromaticly nutty/sweet and just a bit salty, never cloying; gives it best in medium-large bores, the slowest draw will avoid it turns bitter or acidic or... dull.
Amphora Green is nothing to write home, but honest and well behaved. Something worth to smoke once in a while just as a temporary passage into the mild-aromatics.

Ah, well, can't ask too much of a commercial drugstore tobacco...
The bakkie is nice, rather large broken flake, aroma rather flowerly with a hint of sweetness.
Smoking makes you puff harder and harder in order to try to get some real taste and nicotine kick to keep you happy. The taste is not bad, though, in terms of flavours. Mainly nutty, and people like the aroma.
If you are a beginner, this one could do the job for you, but the casing could be a bit overwhelming at first. But it doesn't smoke wet and doesn't require relight after relight, at the condition that you let it dry out for a reasonnable amount of time.

Not the best tobacco made by Amphora, that's for sure...too bland and flavourless, it can give some satisfaction when mixed with a whisky aromatic blend.

Even under the D&E period, this Amphora had a bloated, overwhelming taste of caramel, chocolate and vanilla!. If your thing is aromatic tobacco, this should be close to paradise. The newer Imperial Tobacco version is not exactly better. It is not as refined as the older version and the sauce used to sweeten the tobacco is not as exquisite. Basically an extremely sweet Cavendish, with a bitter undertone, that will linger in your pipe (and your palate), long after you've smoked it, so be careful.

What a boring tobacco! An usual cavendish-burley-oriental with a nicely sweet room aroma and almost no taste! Hazelnut flavor? Where?!? A blend that doesn't fall in the "unsmokable" category, but in the "why should I smoke this stuff" one. It's a decently behaved, not goopy and not overly cased aromatic, but if you add the blandness and the fact that it is like hundreds of other equally boring cavendish drugstore blends to the slight tongue burn it gives, why should you be tempted to smoke this stuff?

'Well' I tried this in 3 different pipe's,it light's easily & puff's along very nicely. But all I could think of was a menthol feel to the tongue.Maybe it was me??? I'm not saying it's bad, but I do think you need to have an acquired taste for it.It leaves a nice clean ash at the bottom of the bowl & I prefered the taste half way through.I know of a gentleman who has smoked nothing but this, since it was first released. In it's class I'll give 2 out of 4 star's.

I used to mix the Amphora green with Borkum Riff Cherry then let it dry out a bit, it was my tobacco since the 80's till about 5?or more years ago. When I could no longer purchase the tobacco I quit smoking. Most people loved the aroma and the taste was of chocolate, hazelnuts and cherries. I generally smoked it in a bent pipe. Can no longer find the green and I noticed that Douve Egberts sold it to Imperial. Where I live in Canada tobacco costs over $20.00 a pouch so even now I seldom smoke. I have just bought Borkum Riff mixture with Cherry Cavendish which is OK so far but i miss the hints of chocolate and hazelnuts. We'll see how it goes.

I would smoke this if I couldn't get the red. Nutty and rich this blend is. A change of pace from the red or brown blends.
