To commemorate our being established in 1881, we have created this broad cut mixture of Virginias and Orientals for their outstanding aroma and flavour. The Fox Anniversary Mixture is finished with the distinctive flavour of mango.
Opening the tin reveals quite a coarse mixture that's 50/50 brown and black. It smells very heavily cased, and this is shown by the fact it's stained the greaseproof paper lining. I don't normally like the tin-note from mango/citrus aromatics but this is pretty nice: as well as smelling of mango's, it also has a big sweetness. Even though the lining of the can's stained, the tobacco's not too wet.
The mango is the boss where the flavour's concerned, there's no doubt about that, but as well as the mango the smoke tastes sweet, and creamy. The actual structure of the smoke's a comfort: I get big billows of smoke that are very thick and heavy. The big plumes also give a very fruity note, however due to the thickness of them a window needs to be opened. The weight of the flavouring causes Anniversary to bite, and I'm not talking about a tiny nip: it's tolerable when sipped, but if it's smoked in a relaxed style it causes carnage. It's a bit of a change to have a stronger flavoured aromatic that's not a total lightweight with nicotine: medium.
I'm more than confident that many smokers will love this, it's a good blend, but for me it falls down on two subjective things: obviously the bite reduces the rating, and after some time my palate takes on an unpleasant taste which really spoils it.
Even though this has been made well, it doesn't suit me:
