Yuletide is a newer seasonal mixture that changes from year to year. This year (2015), we have created a blend of Virginia tobaccos with whispers of plum pudding and vanilla in the background. This blend is neatly packaged in 2 ounce cans. A perfect stocking stuffer for the pipe smoker.

This is the last of the five samples given to me by my nephew and was far different than the other four which all happened to be VaPers or variations of the same. I am not aromatic hater, but this one was not to my liking for a variety of reasons.

Christmas blends are almost a genre onto themselves anymore with seemingly every blender throwing in on the craze and introducing blends that are likely just a reason to give all of us an excuse to buy one more of their tins each year. So there is Christmas tasting blends like fruitcake, rum and what have you to put you in the festive mood these seem to dominate the majority of the blends.

There is Christmas Cheer by McClelland, which is only Christmassy in name and the picture of Santa in the paper disc under the plastic lid. Otherwise it is a Virginia masterpiece that has become a near must have every year for many a piper, myself included.

Then there is the "wtf" Christmas blends like those by Cornell & Diehl, which are put in a really festive can and given a different name each year that is Christmassy by nature, but is drastically different from one year to the next. These blends are nicotine hammers that are almost crazy in their composition.

I guess my point to this ramble is that there is only so much you can buy for Christmas unless you smoke like a locomotive. This blend just did not cut it for me. I haven't been exposed to enough Peretti blends to know which group outlined above they fit in, but I would put this as a feeble attempt to get into the first aromatic Christmas aroma group, but strongly bordering on the wtf group.

The topping is light on this one, which is something I usually like in an aromatic, but a heavy topping just seems right for the holiday gooper in that first category. For those blends I really enjoy the annual Peterson Holiday offering, which is rich and just screams Christmas and provides a decent amount of body. This one by contrast was kind of weak all around, topping and body.

As for the wtf group, I like the C&D offerings, because if I am going to go wtf, I want to go all the way, like with capital letters. Like this WTF! :) The C&D blends are always packed with a boatload of nicotine which helps if you just don't like the current years offering, at least you don't feel like you need a follow up bowl. As previously stated, this one was pretty weak on the nic, the body and the topping.

I guess I am just too set in the Christmas blends I choose to smoke and am not easily accepting of anew blend that pushes either of the three staples out of the picture or forces me to get another tin in the cellar that I will never enjoy at Christmas as my three bowls a day will never get rid of what I have over all the remaining Christmasses in my life. So with that said, I will not be getting any more of the Peretti Christmas blends. Well, at least I won't pay for any more. If anyone wants to send me a sample of the 2016, I will smoke it. lol

I guess a Bah Humbug is appropriate somewhere in this review.

L.J. Peretti's Yuletide is a seasonal blend that changes from year to year. The 2015 iteration is a blend of Virginias with just a hint of plum pudding and vanilla added and comes in 2oz. tins.

The Virginias in the blend are diverse. The mixture is mostly medium-brown in color, with some lighter bright Virginia strands and specks of black stoved leaf. It is slightly sweet, with a suggestion of the dryness that characterizes Peretti's matured Virginias usually found in their more-traditional English mixtures. The additional flavorings are only slightly noticeable in the taste, but they are decidedly more apparent in the room note. Without any chemical taste or sticky, goopy residue, the flavorings are all-natural--just as one would expect from Peretti.

Sure to garner compliments from even the staunchest anti-smoking olfactorries, Yuletide is the perfect tobacco for holiday gatherings (which no doubt is one of the principal motivations for all the various Christmas blends). Not only is Yuletide a crowd-pleaser, it still tastes like tobacco. I never smoke aromatics (apart from Peretti's equally festive Thanksgiving Day and some of their Burley blends), but I found this year's Yuletide to be a nice change of pace and a real Christmas treat.
