From Russ: This is a little known component that I use for a variety of purposes. It is a dark tobacco, similar to burley that is cured over the open fire, giving the tobacco a smokiness that is much more subtle than latakia, a deep earthiness, and a decent wallop. I like to use a bit in a latakia based blend to give it a touch of sharpness or to add body to Virginias. High in nicotine, moderate burning quality.

Summary: a sweet Burley with a less-intense smoky taste than most dark fired offers, this blending component smokes well on its own.

Where most dark fired tobacco ends up fully dark, this blending Burley is more accurately described as partially smoked. It still has the campfire flavor of dark fired, but more of the natural sweet, sour and nutty taste of the Burley emerges underneath it. At full nicotine strength, it is designed for use in blends but smokes well on its own for those who want a codger smoke amplified into the next dimension. When blended, it adds the dark fired flavor but stretches across the middle range of tastes without dominating the blend, making this a foundation ingredient for blends. When combined with cube cut Burley and a strong Virginia, for example, the Blending Dark Fired Kentucky Burley (BDFKB) flavor stretches to include those others as support, it remains the major player but does not dominate other flavors completely like regular dark fired.

Great smoke... fairly strong tobacco with good flavor & aroma. Not the least bit harsh or bite. I liked the sample well enough to try the tinned version. Also liked the HH Bold Kentucky from the tin very well... even better to my best recollection. This could be an all-day smoke for me and will become a regular in my rotation. I can't explain all the subtle nuances of this blend or why I like it... only that it is an excellent, tasty blend for me. If you like this genre of blends, you can't go wrong with HH, Dark Fired Kentucky Burley.
