Notes: The portfolio on their website says the following (translated from German): "Rauch pipe tobacco is 100% natural tobacco, without additives, 100% grown and processed in Austria. The Rauch family values down-to-earthness in all aspects of living. Besides taking care of their vineyards in Styria rich of volcanic soil, closely in touch with nature, getting back to the basic traditional values like family, diligence and people working together is part of this life. In this spirit the Rauch family continues the tradition of tobacco farming that Alois Rauch had committed himself to until 1980. Affectionately, they farm tobacco themselves creating the foundation for the pure delight of 100% Austrian natural tobacco. Rauch Pfeifentabak has a pleasant note of wild honey, licorice and hay flowers and develops a smooth, mildly spicy smoke."

The owner claims that he revived his grandfather's tobacco farm in Styria that ceased production in 1980. Johannes Rauch also produces the 'Ostarrichi' brand cigar, made of Austrian-grown tobacco.

Pouch aroma is of very good Burley. As the producers claim, you might catch a whiff of finer notes, hay flowers most definitely. There is a small humidifier in the pouch. Still, the tobacco comes out rather dry - but it can and should be smoked like that, much like Landtabak or Semois. Lighting and burning reflect the low moisture. I tend to pack these blends tighter than regular ribbon cut Virginias, for example, to get a slower-burning smoke out of them.

The smoke is a delight! A Burley, claimed to be naturally grown, delivering with its spectrum from Macadamia nutty to cigar smoke (taking you from Java to Habana and back) with a natural nicotine punch to the ribs. As with many Burley based "country tobaccos" like Belgian Semois or Austrian "Landtabak", in my very personal opinion, there are three very definitive acts through which the blend takes you. One, where you encounter the occupant in the bowl of your pipe only to find it a really good smoky smoke - less like dark-fired Kentucky, but very much hay-like, maybe citrusy. But really, s m o k y. Two, where now the blend is brought to shine - in all its colours; this is the time for it to show you a variety of possibilities. What a pleasure! All the while making for a full-bodied, strong, but mild to the tongue smoke. Also, leading over from act one, this is also the bridge to Three - Macadamia nuts, chestnuts fresh off the stove. Nutty indeed!

A must for Burley lovers. A must for connoisseurs of European country blends. I am very proud of Austria.

Pipe Used: Stanwell Billiard, Butz-Choquin Flamme Extra Apple

Age When Smoked: Fresh from the (recently manufactured) pouch.

Purchased From: Tabak Gausterer, Schwechat, Austria

Similar Blends: Landtabak Spezial, but much more refined and nuanced, adding that extra cigar leaf taste, Motzek - Highland Balls, but without the Orient and Virginia. The Burley used to wrap Highland Balls and also as a filler is very similar in my opinion., Windels - Half Grove Semois is somehow similar..
